History
In 1848, James Marshall discovered gold at Coloma and began one of the largest immigrations in history. In 1849, emigrants settled in the Grass Valley area, attracted by the lush meadows and pastoral setting, and they had no idea that the area would produce 960 million dollars worth of gold.
Early settlement of the Penn Valley area occurred in the mid-1800's, due primarily to its location on a freight wagon route established between Sacramento, and the "Comstock" and "Mother Lode" mining regions to the east. Freighter service made the valley an important transportation stop.
Rural in nature, older farm buildings co-exist with modern homes, and there is a growing business community. Penn Valley maintains a "small town" atmosphere. There is a natural beauty, a very low incidence of crime, and people know each other. Yet there is also a sense of growing and thriving. The area retains much of its historical pastoral atmosphere while moving into the 21st century.
Recreation
The area offers an abundance of gold panning, mountain biking, hiking, walking, fishing, camping, boating, and white water rafting. There are many historic state parks and museums that are points of interest for history and nature lovers.
